Ask DJ Lyons: Home Office Renovations Day 12

My home office is being re-done

It is Day 12 of the home office renovation adventure. This does not mean 12 consecutive days. This simply means the 12th day progress got made on the restructuring of the entire room.

On this day, Sunday, February 20, 2011, the chinking finally got delivered after several day's wait. Then my husband and I did a bit more caulking and filling of cracks. Afterward, we spent a long time chinking between the logs of our log cabin room where a black chink was done before.

Tomorrow, once this chink is dry, we can finally stain the entire room with Colonial Yellow. After it is dry, we can call Tommy and Dal and let them know we are ready for the Rosewood Laminant to be laid.

Once that is done, we can stop looking like the Hoarder's in the rest of our house as we can finally start moving the furniture, etc. back in. I am so eager for this job to be finished. I am excited at the thought that I can be typing up a hub from the comfort of my newly renovated home office.

Perma Chink

We used 2 1/2 tubes of Perma Chink. The blue holder is called a Perma Chink Gun. This was a loaner from Chuck. Thanks so much, Chuck!

Left wall, Back wall, and Right wall

Here are the three main walls of the room: left wall, back wall, and right wall. Notice that there is now white chinking between the logs. Formerly, where the built-in chest of drawers had been located, there was black chinking or bare spots.

Entrance of Room

Here is the room entrance. You can see a peek at some of our hoarder's look outside the room. Sigh!

Before we could chink some of those places, I had to add more filler. I was reminded of a childhood memory suddenly when I had to add three to four layers of filler between two logs. I joked to my husband, "It took so much filler that I could almost see China between those two logs."

The childhood memory that I had not thought of in years was that some of my friends and I used to try to dig a hole so deep that we could see China. I would happily picture a little Chinese girl staring back at me when we finally got the hole dug deep enough. I think I was 7 or 8 at the time. I wonder if any little Chinese child ever tried to dig a hole deep enough that he or she could see the United States. Obviously, at that time, I had no knowledge of how the earth was formulated and other basic facts.

Log Jam 29 Oz. Tubes (Case of 10 Tubes) Color- Buff
Freeze-thaw stable Introduced in 1985 proven formula Log Jam Log Home Chinking is the elastic chinking that simply responds better to log movement than other chinking. Since all logs move, this elasticity allows Log Jam Chinking to handle log movement, in any type of weather, over and over again. It stretches and compresses as logs shrink and swell-up to 100% of the original joint size (+/-50%). Yet, it maintains the traditional look of mortar without "stretching out," so it still looks good after years of log movement. Plus, it's the only log chinking to hold a UL one-hour fire rating when applied in accordance with Fire Resistance Directory Design No. UL519. Log Jam's six colors seal your log home or log cabin with the traditional look of mortar and are available in two convenient sizes.
